Author Magellan 760 swapped for 3200

Well after two attempts to repair my 760 and some pressure phone calls to
California Consumers Protection and their corporate office, Magellan finally
agreed to replace my 760 with a Maestro 3200 which arrived three days ago.

Perfect for me - acquires the satellites quickly, small, stick in my pocket,
battery operated and ideal for my motorcycle needs. Transfers from vehicle
to vehicle quickly.

In spite of all that, I'll never purchase anything made by Magellan.

Worst "service" on the planet.

Didn't they, at one point, offer you a Maestro 4210 in exchange? Even if you
wanted the smaller screen couldn't you have wrangled a 3210 out of them?
Just curious.

Also, thanks for helping make my decision about trying to get my RM 700/760
repaired a lot easier. Even though I have over $1600 invested in it, it just
isn't worth the hassle. I got 3 1/2 years of faithful service out of it and
now it's time for a funeral. At least I saved the cost of the latest RM 700
map update.

When I talked to the guy at Corporate he really didn't know which model was
available. That was the point at which I had the most bargaining power but I
let the opportunity slip by mainly because I was not familar with the entire
Magellan line and was simply willing to settle for anything except an Exxon
road map!

Yep, I had about $1,200 tied up in my 760 and we had given our daughter a
760 Christmas of 2006 which had dropped to about half. That 760 is in the
town dump because the screen dropped down and Magellan couldn't fix it. I
really liked the 760 but this 3200 suits me fine. Much more compact and I
can slip it into my shirt pocket as I dismount or exit my vehicle. I'll
never update the maps (3Q07) because it is simply not worth the hassle.

One other item - I purchased a Toshiba laptop with a one year warranty and
put it on my American Express card April 2006. AX matches the manufacturers
warranty. So yesterday the Toshiba coughed up a lung. I called AX and they
are processing my claim - no Indians involved - no fuss - no hassle. I was
told that they would either authorize a repair depot to fix it or replace
the unit. That is worth the price of the card ($55 per year). Don't leave
home without it when purchasing anything with a warranty.

You said in a prior post that you would make the exec's email/address
available after they took care of you.
Care to do that now????

I got to tell my story about the lousy Tech Support to somebody that
matters. Tired of talking to India.

I bought a 3210 and I really like it. One thing I thought of after buying it
was that it would great for my motorcycle but there's no earphone plugin.
Does anyone have the expertise to describe how I might modify it to add one?
tnx

I don't want to investigate the possibilities of wiring an external earphone
until after my warranty runs out. One thing I might caution you on: some
states do not allow speaker(s) in your helmet. Mine doesn't but I've only
seen a couple of guys get stopped for that. Actually they weren't stopped
for that but noticed at a license check.

Saw a photo recently of a 3210 mounted on a R-A-M mount with a condom
protecting it from the rain. Kind of an attention getter.

I used to belong to a Goldwing group and everyone had earphones and mikes in
their helmets and we all communicated with each other and our wives on the
back. My wife was a real back seat driver in the car, it was hell on the
bike ;-) A friend got himself killed on his bike and now my wife won't ride
anymore. I ride solo which is quiet and peaceful. When you are retired and
are with your wife 24/7 it's really nice to get away sometimes on the bike
alone.

We are both retired and always together on the bike. Can't imagine being
without her. We like to share the experience we are both addicted to.
