Are there any known problems that can occur after having a phone
unlocked? I recently purchased a new phone and was considering having
it unlocked by a guy who does this type of thing for a living. I
contacted O2 to make sure that if I did this my warranty would still
stand and I was told by customer service that if I got my phone
unlocked within the warranty period the warranty would be void. I
don't want to take the chance if there are known problems associated
with phone unlocking or at least within the first year.

Bit of a grey area to be honest. Depending on the method used to unlock the
phone it *could* affect your warranty. Most phones nowadays leave no traces
on the method used to unlock so warranty would not be affected in those
cases.

It depends. Some phones can be unlocked by generating the unlock code
and entering it. Some can be unlocked by electronically prodding them
in the right place to switch the locks off. Some have to be unlocked
by overwriting some of their code with a hacked version that bypasses
the lock.

The last of them is probably not a very safe method.
