Author How does 2-way SMS work?

As far as I understand it:

a) In an SMS header, there is no explicit 'reply-to' number - merely a
Sender ID, which could be anything;

b) There is no unique message-ID which could be tracked;

c) The recipient could respond via any SMSC - not necessarily the one
that originally sent them the message

Please feel free to correct my understanding and to explain exactly how
2-way SMS can reliably work.

TIA, Kit
