Why on earth do people ring these numbers. LEARN to ignore numbers you do
not recognise. If someone calls then look at the display, if it's witheld
do not answer, if they want you they will leave a message, if you don't know
the person don't call back. The same for text messages, if you don't know
the person then don't reply and don't ring numbers when you don't know why
you are ringing or who it is !
The scammers only make money out of really stupid people and I can't believe
how many of them are about, and how many are daft enough to admit they fall
for every scam going. That's probably why they are repetedly targetted.
It's down to common sense!

Indeed.

Our LCR box is set to refuse all 09 numbers and all 070 numbers. Seems
like a good policy for people without LCR boxes too.

Indeed. My VoIP box is set to bar these as well. Also 0871 numbers..! I
allow 0870 (reluctantly) as there are still some places not listed on
www.saynoto0870.com but fortunately I don't need to use them very often.

Don't follow you here. We are talking about incoming numbers surely ?
What's that got to do with a Least-Cost Routing Box ? Not that I
disagree with the policy of barring inbound 070 numbers (except if
you know a specific persun who uses such a number). Aren't 09 numbers
disallowed from being presented as CLI, anyway ?

It's about unknown/strange numbers being presented on CLI and people being
ripped off when they call them back.

Yes. That's what I thought, but why do we care ? If people are stupid
enough to dial back unrecognised numbers, they deserve what they get, and
that includes getting charged a lot. It's hardly a rip-off if someone just
blindly dials a presented number..
My local newspaper carries a few premimum rate numbers within its pages,
as do varies vehicles passing my house. I don't automatically dial these,
just because I think I have to. The fact that someone dialed someone's phone
"from" one such number doesn't mean the original recipient HAS to dial back !
Anyway, the persun who said they had an LCR box to prevent dialing of
this sort of numbers was Mr. Hairydog. I doubt if he's the sort to
randomly dial stupid numbers !
Also, how can an LCR box or similar decide what to do with such a
dial-back, if the original recipient used "1471-3": the LCR box isn't
going to know *what* that number was, is it ?
