HTC handsets - SPV / SDA / XDA / i-mate / Qtek

| Is anyone else as confused as me?!
Orange have the SPV C500 / 550 / 600
T-Mobile do the SDA / SDA music / SDA II
O2 have the XDA / XDA II that I know of
then there's the i-mate / Qtek branded ones.
How on earth are you supposed to compare like-for-like?
I'm currently on Orange so would be looking at the SPV C550 as an
upgrade. However the T-Mobile Web'n'Walk tarrifs with 12 months half
price look pretty unbeatable, so then it'd be the SDA II instead. Are
these handsets the same? (They don't look the same - the SDA II looks
like an i-mate SP5m, but spec. wise is closer to the SP4m / O2 XDA,
isn't it?)
Things that seem to matter are which version of Microsoft Smartphone
they run, 3G and wireless, camera and screen resolutions, etc.
On the other hand - does anyone have experience of both MS Smartphone
and Nokia / Symbian (as in the N70)? I have heard that Symbian can
only view, not edit, Word / Excel files, but are there any other
drawbacks of either?
I'd love to go for the SDA II with Co-Pilot chucked in, but would the
N70 be a better buy?

They are all the same machine, with different branding.

| I've just got an SPV C550 as an upgrade from Orange this week. They seem to
be offering them very cheaply at the moment, even to OVP Vm customers like
me.
The C550 is a bit of a curate's egg - very highly spec'ed, especially for
the price, but not as well made as the Nokia. Also the Nokia is a 3G handset
(the C550 is GSM) and I know from calls from a N70 owning friend that the
call/sound quality is excellent. Its also a very capable and well spec'd
phone too.
The screen on the C550 is outstanding, but the image quality off the camera
is nothing like as good as that from my SonyEricsson K750i, probably because
that brilliant phone has 2megapixel camera with autofocus.
If you have the need for a phone that runs Windows Mobile, then the C550 is
the obvious, and good value, choice. There are loads of cheap or free
programs available and you can easily unlock it from Orange too - take a
look at the forums of www.coolsmartphone.com for links and info. The site
also has a good review of the C550.
But I reckon the N70 is a better phone all-round, although more expensive,
and the two are not really exactly comparable.

Just be aware that the C550 is a bit of a halfway house in terms of
specification. It runs Windows Mobile 2003 SE and yet has the QVGA
screen. Problem is that very few developers seem to be re-developing
apps to fit the larger screen, unless they are also re-developing them
for Windows Mobile 2005.
I'd be wary of getting a C550 if I was intending to use third party
application on it. If all I wanted was a bloody good phone with good
diary, contacts, email and multi-media abilities then fine, but if I
wanted games and other stuff then I'd steer clear.
I've only just realised this - for around six months I've been lusting
after a C550 but am now quite sure I'm giving it a miss and going for
an Imate SP5(m) instead.

They can't _all_ be the same! Which of the Orange SPVs is the T-Mobile
SDA II equivalent to? Are any of them on Windows Mobile 05?

No, poor choice of words. What I meant was that each HTC handset is
branded and called something slightly different by each network.
I gave up trying to keep up with them a long time ago!

| Check Andy's mobilechecker site,
it's usually got the variants listed at the top of each one.
e.g.
"Manufactured by HTC and sold in the UK as the i-mate K-JAM,
Qtek 9100, T-Mobile MDA Vario,
Orange SPV M3000 and O2 XDA Mini S"
Although I've heard that Orange have decided not to release it !?

| I hadn't noticed that info - thanks.
>From the information on mobilechecker.com, I can see the following
imate SP3i = T-Mobile SDA
imate SP5 = Qtek 8310
imate SP5m = Qtek 8100 = T-Mobile SDA music = Orange SPV c550
However, the one that's on offer from T-Mobile currently, the SDA II,
doesn't have any such info., and I can't find anywhere whether it's WM
2003 SE or 2005. This is the one I'm most interested in I think.
I can see several mentions of the T-Mobile SDA music, but I assume this
is a different variant to the SDA II, though there isn't a page for the
SDA music on the mobilechecker site.
You can see why I'm confused...

I got one myself as well on VM upgrade. For the price its an absolute
bargain.
So far there have been three annoyances I've found with it.
It doesn't have a GPRS data counter as standard AFAICS. This really is a
ridiculous omission. Fortunately third party apps can be obtained
cheaply which have been reported to work: haven't tried any myself yet.
The transfer speed using the supplied ActiveSync software is rather slow
for large files. I was attempting to transfer a ~200Mb video file and 20
minutes later it was still chugging away. I have up and plugged the card
into a mini-SD card reader. The whole transfer took under a minute.
That leads to the third annoyance. The card is located under the battery
so you have to pull it out to remove it.

Do you think the delay of the overdue C600 may have anything to do with
them still having stocks of the C550? Notwithstanding the potential for
differing costs I would imagine they might find shifting the C550 (or
C500 which I see they're still offering) once the C600 is out rather
difficult.

May be because the activesync is only USB 1.1 whereas your card reader
is undoubtedly USB 2?

The 550 is not the same. The SPV 550 is a rebadged HTC Hurricane, while
the sp5 is a Tornado.
The SPV 600 is the equivalent to the sp5 but (as far as I understand it)
will not have wifi capability.

| So where does the T-Mobile SDA II fit in then? Is it a rebadge of the
SPV c550 or SPV c600 version? Is it WM 2003 SE or 2005? Is it QVGA?
Thanks,
trogit
