Cost of texting abroad
|

| I am going to France soon and plan to take my O2 pay monthly phone. I do not
need to make or recieve calls whilst there except in an absolute emergency
when roaming costs do not matter. What I am interested in is texts. I see
that it will cost me 25p per message to text using conventional methods. I
notice that vgsmail charge 4.1p per message.. does this mean I can access
GPRS abroad and send a message for 4.1p? I realise there will be additional
GPRS charges, anyone any idea how much these will be per message?
Thankyou for any response.

Yes. You should be able to access GPRS while in France and use vgsmail to
send your texts. They'll cost you 4.1p + GPRS charges.

At the moment, you have 2 solutions send texts via vgsmail from your
mobile:
- use the wap interface. Save the following address, making the obvious
replacements, in one of your WAP browser bookmarks:
http://www.vgsmail.com/cgi/default....SSWORD&.State=1
This will take you directly to your account where you'll be able to send
SMS. Using the WAP interface does use quite a bit of bandwidth though. On
Virgin, it costs me 5p of GPRS communication to use it to send an SMS which
corresponds to 10KB of data. Check the roaming GPRS charges for O2 to
figure out how much it's gonna cost you.
- use the small Java midlet that you can find on the vgsmail website. This
makes texting much easier and it uses so little bandwith that you'll
probably have to pay close to nothing in GPRS charges to use it.
In either case, try it here in the UK first in order to check that
everything works alright. You can use your free credit for that.

Thankyou for your response. I have done as you say and have downloaded the
Java midlet, exactly what I was after! Thanks.

Check the cost of GPRS roaming with O2 very carefully, it used to be minimum
GBP1.03 per APN per day.
