Someone suggested recently that three would possibly be ending their
walled garden for internet access in September.

Has anyone got any update on this?

I would love to FTP from my three phone (A1000)

Nothing official, but I've heard it suggested that they were tied to
their content providers for 3 years and the contracts started in
September 2002 or thereabouts.

We'll have to see what happens.

Don't hold your breath. An official 3UK response to an inquiry by
www.3g.co.uk indicated otherwise.

Remember this can be a very fast moving industry.

Don't be surprised if the "garden wall" does start to come down in
September with Internet access possible via your 3 mobile when connected to
a PC/laptop.

I wouldn't be surprised I'd be sodding amazed, though I've seen rumours
elsewhere.

I'd be even more shocked if they don't have some ridiculous initial
charge for it. This might be followed by a statement analagous to GPRS
bewilderment: "we can't understand why very few people are using the
service when it is competitively priced at £20 per Mb". Alternatively
"this shows we were right all along and there is no demand for it".

If they manage both they'd gain at least one customer :-)

Is that september 2005, 2006, 2015 or later? 3 have allegedly been
going to offer internet connectivity "soon" for years. But they
haven't done.

Their PAYG credit expires after a month.

Their CS is usually hopeless.

Calls drop instead of handing off to O2 when moving out of 3 coverage.

Don't go there.

It was based on a suggestion that their content contracts ran
exclusively for 3 years, they were signed in September 2002, so
September 2005 would in theory be the point where they could provide
open access.

That's bad, and needs revising.

>

I wouldn't call them hopeless, I'd call them script-driven and unable to
think outside their management-imposed box. Doesn't help that they are
several thousand miles away from the place they are dealing with. I have
had only one really bad experience with them.

Only where their coverage is below average, I've seen it happen but not
regularly, and less so recently.

Alternativly I get 500 minutes a month I use to replace the house
phone on a cashback contract that costs me nothing month after the
cashback.

Seems fine to me and after a year 3 get chucked and I get another cash
back deal (be ith with 3 or whoever..)
