I downloaded a wav file to the phone and it plays.

does the phone convert it to MP3 format?

Nope, it is playing the WAV file in its raw format. Converting from WAV (an
uncompressed format) to MP3 (a lossy, compressed format) would be illogical
as the phone would then have to uncompress the MP3 again (in real-time) to
play it back.....
