Porting....and porting back

| I am at the end of a contract with Orange....will they let me port my number
to a PAYG phone on another network, then get a new Orange contract and port
the number back, hence taking advantage of the better deals for new
customers, and keeping my number?

But surely "A customer forgotten is like a unicorn, they don't exist".
Wasn't the gist of O's advertising last month that existing customers
could have the same deals as new customers?

Yes.
I've just done it myself, ported out to a virgin sim, ported back in,
got a free 6230i and a free photo printer, the free printer etc wasn't
available for existing customers.
Just have to put up with a not so good network for a week.

and your comments about virgin on what exactly??????????

What?
My comments on them? They're crap. Took 20 - 30 minutes to answer the
phone each time I called, no reception indoors at work, and only 1 bar
of reception at home. Orange, Voda and O2 all have full reception at
both places.

I suppose it's where you live, I too ported out of Orange earlier this
year to Virgin (thanks to their free sims). I was pleasantly surprised
by their coverage - I'd used one2one years ago and they realy were pants
back then. I've now ported to Vodafone and too be honest I'm
disappointed in Voda's coverage - I get the impression they built their
network in the mid 90's and left it at that. T mobile seem to have been
quietly adding transmitters for the past few years so they are not to
bad now - well at least where I live :)
As for their CS when I've rang them to port in and out I don't think
they've taken more than 10 minutes to answer.

same here, T-Mobile coverage much better than Orange.

Same here, in last two homes, T-Mobile better than Orange. (And O2 better
still)
