PAC code / security checks

| When I ported my PAYG number to contract over a year ago all I needed
to give to get a PAC was my phone number. In fact the operator at first
misheard my number and gave me the PAC for someone elses mobile! I just
tried to get a PAC for my now PAYG sim and they also asked for the
sim's serial number this time which I suppose is a bit more secure than
it was before.
I just bought a "gold number" off eBay, when I got the sim the
packaging was sealed but the serial number was clearly printed on the
packaging. I'm just wondering, would it be possible for the person who
sold me this number to phone O2 and just port the number back and sell
it again? I've registered my mobile to my name and address, would O2
ask for my address now that its registered in my name or maybe I should
buy another O2 PAYG sim and port it so that the serial number is
different? What would happen if someone did fraudulently port my
number, any chance of getting it back? I know if I was on contract
there would be better protection but I'm not really willing to go to
contract just yet.

If somebody requested a PAC code for your number then O2 would write
you a letter and say sotheiung like, "we are sorry you are leaving, are
you sure?" You could then tell O2 that you did not request the PAC so
nobody else should be able to use it.

I think you're just making things up, most O2 PAYG sim cards aren't
registered to an address so who would they send a letter to? Last time
I requested a PAC there was no letter.

Don't they send you a text too?

They send a letter and text if you're on contract, I just ported my
contract number from O2. Not sure about PAYG though, I know they didn't
use to but that was over a year ago.

When requesting PAC codes, I've had letters from both Orange and
easyMobile.

Cheers,
Jason.
A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?
A: Top-posting.
Q: What is the most annoying thing on Usenet and in e-mail?

When requesting a PAC code from O2 PAYG CS you'll be asked (or should be)
some questions about usage before the PAC code can be issued. This will be
questions like or similar to when was the last time the phone was topped up,
what method of top up, number recently called, etc. So long as your SIM
has been topped up and used you will be OK. If would be worthwhile
registering the SIM in your name though, it will make calls to CS easier
