email with virgin mobile?

| Hello as subject is it possible to setup email access on virgin mobile
network? I want to setup so I can get my blueyonder broadband email sent
also to my mobile.

Yes, as long as you have a phone which is capable of email (eg a smartphone)
then Virgin will send and receive email (POP3 and SMTP) without a problem.
I'm on Virgin and my ISP is Blueyonder, like you.
Just set up your email account on the phone exactly as you would on your pc.
The email is carried over GPRS (or Enhanced WAP, as Virgin call it) so watch
the charges - it costs £5.00 per Mb!
And GPRS will have to be activated on your account and your phone set up for
it. Luckily Virgin have a great system for setting up phones for GPRS - you
just type in your number in the relevant section of their website and they
send you a text which sets it all up automatically! However, if you phone
was originally supplied by Virgin you shouldn't have to do this.

Are you sure about that?? I'm not doubting you as you seem to already have
it working, but when I asked their CS 6 months or so ago, I was told only
WAP access was available over GPRS, not other services. Is this a recent
addition to their service?

No, it's not a documented service and Virgin doesn't officially support it.
In fact to get it to work you need to use the numerical IP address of the
mail server rather than the server's name.

I didn't realise that it wasn't officially supported. On my C500 email works
fine and you don't have to use a numerical IP address, just the incoming and
outgoing server names.
I haven't tried sending any attachments yet but I'm sure that would be fine
too.

| I've been sending and receiving email on my Nokia 36230 on Virgin for a
few weeks just fine. If you only receive a few text emails it only
seems to cost about 2p a go - seems great value to me.
If the email contains photos it just refuses to download them - which
is fine by me.

I've got incoming working OK from blueyonder - which outgoing SMTP server
are you using?

I'm actually using a different outgoing server, but the
'smtp.blueyonder.co.uk' server should be fine. Make sure you tick the box
'my outgoing server requires authentication' when you set it up on the
phone.
