Can I trust this turkey with my credit card details?

Some guy with an Indian accent claiming to be from Car Phone Warehouse
called our landline number offering an LG8330 with 500 minutes any network,
any time, including 0870 and 0845 numbers ande 100 texts working out at £120
for the entire year in total.

That seems like a good offer to me, but now he wants debit or credit card
details for identification before sending out an "expensive package" with
the phone and more forms for me to fill in to authorize direct debit.

He says the offer is only available over the phone. Because he is calling
from a call centre I cannot call him back although there is a "customer
service" number I can call but I can't place the order that way.

The number he's calling from is showing up on my mobile as +161464951979
number, whatever that means. There's a delay on the line like it's from
India, maybe. What do you think. This is a pretty good offer, no? But is
there something suspicious? Can I trust this guy with my credit card
details.

Many thanks for any thoughts, suggestions or general purpose tips, etc.

Most grateful. If you need more info, just ask. Thanks.

Yes. But get two, as it's such a good deal.

Never give your credit card details over the phone, plain and simple. Any
serious company would offer secure ways of payment. And if the guy says
that he is carephone warehouse but that this offer is only available over
the phone, then you can be almost certain that this is a scam of some sort.

Never hand over details when they call you. Always get verifiable details
and call them back. Never enter into a contract by phone if you can not
verify the details (T&C etc.) either by looking at what you have, or on the
net etc.

In this case the caller is in one of three places: -

1. Columbus, Ohio USA (but a digit too many for NANP and NU)
or if their CLI is screwed up and they are really in
2. Manchester (but AFAIAA the 464 sub code is unallocated, there are too
many digits and it is NR)
or they are using VOIP in India, but haven't inserted the country code (91)
so they are actually in
3. Punjab (but still probably a digit too many and also NR)

Yet.

Someone you don't know has your credit card details. I don't know about
you but it would scare the willies out of me.

Why scares you? When you hand your credit card over at a petrol pump,
restaurant do you really know the people swipping your card? In a
restaurant they walk of with your card, and then come back a couple of
minuites later, plenty of time for them to get your details, including the
last 3 digits on the signature strip.

If you do not auhorise the transaction, you will not to pay a single penny.
You are protected by the law. I agree with you I would never give my
details out like this. But giving them to a website, I would have no
problems.....if the goods didnt arrive I get my money back, (from the credit
card company). If the goods are not what was advertised, and the site
doesnt give me a full refund, I get a refund (from the credit card company).
Paying by credit card is the safiest way of paying.

I try and pay for everything by credit card, its then actually recorded for
your own records, and its easy to get the money back from the credit card
company if things do not arrive.

It made me laugh when a while back credit card companies were advertising
that there cards are 100% internet safe.....fraud proof (I think barclaycard
are running a similar campaign currently).....by law all credit cards offer
this protection...they have to.

There are far more important things to worry about, than somebody getting
hold of your credit card details....like the sky falling on your head!!

Not with me they don't, I never let the card out of my sight. If they
won't take it without doing so, I take my business elsewhere. In a petrol
station the card is swiped in my presence.
