| I'm shortly off to the US. Can anyone recommend a US SIM I could purchase
over there to make calls back to the UK? If so do you know the cost?

As from their web site:-
Pre Paid rates: international long distance
When calling to outside the US, the following additional charges will
apply:
All other countries $1.50 plus airtime/minute

My Cingular sim is 10c + 39c (International call)
Texts are also only 5c to send to the UK and 5c to receive.
Top up cards can be found at, K-Mart, 7-11 and many petrol stations.
You can also top up over the Net.

Yeah $1.50 is on the steap side. T-Mobile come with a shed load of free
mintues and incoming texts are free on T-mobile. Probley better for local
calls.
Cingular sounds much better deal

I use a "T-Mobile To Go" SIM, which as you say comes with loads of
inclusive minutes, but most of my calls tend to be local. If I want to
call back to the UK I use a calling card via an 800 number.

Tmobiles sims are the cheapest and easiest to get. You can get it on
ebay with minutes, already activated, and sometimes with 1 year
expiration. You also get free limited tzones. SMS is 10 cents to
anywhere in the world, and free to receive of course.
Tmobile is not cheap for making international calls though. Remember,
in the US you pay both for calling and receiving. And, there no premium
charge for people calling US land lines Vs mobiles, it's the same.
