Author Nokia time zone updates

I recently bought a Nokia 6021, and noticed an option for automatic time
updating. When I travelled to France this month it changed time zone soon
after locking in to Orange France. However, when I returned home, I waited
for the reverse change... and waited... and waited. Finally did it
manually. Is there some difference between the data sent out in the two
countries?

Do you use GPRS services in the UK? I would advise that you try to
access GPRS from your phone - just trying to load a WAP site is enough.
Wait for the "G" to show on your screen, and then cancel it. Don't
bother for the entire page to load, as it may cost you. You'll find that
the time will have changed to the correct local one by the time you exit
your WAP menu.

Don't know why abroad it just picks up the time, but in the UK it
somehow relates to GPRS. It's worked like that for me recently.

That could be the connection. I was using it with my TomTom GO for traffic
updates (via GPRS) in France, but I didn't bother with the TTG when coming
home this side of the tunnel. Too late to check it on this occasion, but
I'll try it next time around.

The original GSM spec did not have automatic time as part of the
standard. Later something called NITZ (Network Initiated Time Zone)
was developed so that if your handset supports it (all new Nokias and
most Ericsson handsets and likely other manufacturers as well.) All
the big US networks (cingular & T-Mobile) have NITZ throughout their
networks. Rogers in Canada does (I believe.) Fido in Canada (the
last time I went there in March) does not. It's network and handset
dependant. CDMA handsets on the other hand all have automatic time
adjustment. It's part of the spec for CDMA.

The networks have NITZ more than likely.

On Orange UK if you connect to WAP then a time update comes straight
away.
