It's because he posts using Google Groups rather than a proper newsreader. I
agree it is very annoying when no context is quoted. I wish Google would
sort that out.
On the subject in hand, I'm with Virgin so I was interested to see their
contract tariffs. However, I think they are very expensive!
If you already have a phone then their PAYG monthly bundles are far cheaper,
and you can pay monthly by DD so it's like having a contract anyway, except
you aren't tied in.
Example:
60 minutes per month bundle: 10 pounds.
60 minutes per month contract: 20 pounds.
100 mins plus 200 texts per month bundle: 24 pounds
100 mins plus 200 texts per month contract: 32 pounds
There are some good deals on the Virgin contracts website where you get a
free phone and a certain number of months at half price - I suppose if you
need a new phone a contract might be better, but I'm staying with PAYG.

Agreed. They don't seem competitive, even with their own PAYG.

Not really because the bundles aren't used in an intelligent way - if you
make 100 minutes worth of on network or landline calls your bundle could be
used up before you get the chance to make off network calls. The problem is
that having done this you don't then enjoy a cheaper off network per minute
cost.
Actually, unless you know that you are going to be making enough off network
calls to use your bundle minutes the Virgin system is pretty crappy and a
contract is much better sense and value for money.
I've come to the conclusion that Virgin is only a sensible option (maybe one
of the most sensible) if you tend to call landlines and on network mobiles.
Aside from this you can use 0871 call through numbers to enjoy 15 pence a
minute off network calls of course.

But a *Virgin* contract wouldn't be, which was my point. It's around twice
the cost of a Virgin PAYG bundle.
As far as I'm concerned, nearly all my calls are to non Virgin mobiles, so a
Virgin PAYG bundle seems to make more sense than a Virgin contract.

I'll have a go with the 0871 prefix.
