I have been getting sim registration failed on my n80 on and off for weeks.
Usually a restart gets it back but not last night. I called Orange as soon
as it went off and was on hold for 3 hours and 45 mins before I hung up (I
gave up after an hour and just left it on to see). It wasn't until calling
on another phone that I heard their message saying there were problems.
How many HLRs to Orange have? Is it just one that they've been having
intermittent problems with in the last few months? Is there any chance of
them moving me to a more reliable one if I make a fuss?
It's no joke - they've already mistakenly sent me a replacement handset
because of this HLR problem and to get up to no signal every few days is no
good.

The Sim Registration error message is a common indicative of bad
firmware. Try upgrading the firmware using the Nokia Firmware updater
package or even better use NSS to de-brand & remove all the Orange
crap whilst upgrading to generic firmware.
FWIW - my N80 (supplied as GSM stock - no branding) has been running
happily for the last 3 - 4 weeks since receipt on Nokia's latest
firmware.
Cheers
Jim!

The phone has been running the latest Orange branded firmware which I
installed from the Nokia site (4.0623.0.41). The previous handset which they
chose to replace (and then told me it wasn't the problem) was running the
generic V4 unbranded firmware. I'm hesitant to install the generic firmware
again as it bought about a new problem for me (and others) - the voicemail
icon sticking. The only way to get rid of it was to put the sim in another
phone and leave and delete a message. Even customer services couldnt get rid
of it. I suppose I was lucky they took it back after I'd changed the
firmware. I can live with the Orange crap, all I wanted was tomtom working.
....oh and to be able to receive calls...
Thanks for the reply.

| I called Orange on the night and after 39 minutes on hold they told me it
was a known problem caused by a corrupted HLR and engineers were working on
it. I have a 3G Sim.

The HLR outage has now (Sunday) affected my son's contract 07855 phone
in London, E3. :(
The OCS bod I spoke to told me that 3 HLRs have gone down (don't they
have backups ready???) and that they've drafted in extra staff to cope
with the number of people calling in.

I seem to remember that HLR outages used to be quite common on Orange.
Over the course of the years it happened to me on 3 or 4 occasions. It's
never happened to me on any other network.
