You have to be the original purchaser at the end of your contract as the
code comes from 3. Charge is around £15

The code actually comes from Nokia at the request of 3. Nokia email them
with your code and 3 pass the code on to you, plus £15 or £115.
For BB5 phones from Nokia, only your service provider can get you the
network unlocking code (NUC) - while unlockers have been trying to find ways
to crack the code, none has succeeded so far and no software is available.
Don't waste money on ebay or anyone else claiming to unlock BB5 - it's a
scam and it won't work.

I'm not sure that's entirely legal, if someone were to challenge it -
given that the phone and contract are completely separate.

Only Dejan Kaljevic from Serbia can unlock this phone
6280,6630,n70,6680 and 6681 and he can unlock any phone,blocked... in
my country Serbia. Its cost 70gbp so if you need to unlock bb5 i can do
this.
