I took out a deal with Orange from chatterbox.com, which after
cashback, was supposedly "completely free" for the phone and talk time.
In order to make the deal free, it requires me to downgrade to Orange's
cheapest price plan after 6 months. However what I had not been told is
that you cannot downgrade exactly 6 months from connection, and the
downgrade will only take effect on your next billing date - which is
about 10 days after the connection date. This means I will effectively
have to pay for these extra 10 days, which when my contract is
=A370/month, is a significant amount!

This seems very cheeky, and is simply because, unlike some other
networks, orange randomly make your "billing date" about 1-2 weeks
after your connection date. It seems like a deliberate way to scam the
customer. Even 3 don't do this.

Having called OCS and customer relations, all I get is the usual crap
"sorry the system won't allow us to do it sir". Am getting less and
less impressed by Orange these days...

Does anyone have any advice or know of any way round this?

Thanks,
Ed

This seems like a fair thing for any business to do, after all, you are
stying to scam orange out of the large commision paid when you signed
up for a =A370 contract by deliberately downgrading after 6 months. =A320
odd seems a very fair price for a phone and years worth of free calls!

There is no way around it. It's down to chatterbox to explain these
things to you, but as they are no longer an orange dealer you're
unlikely to get any help from them.

So 10 days worth at £70 per month, got to be £20 max? And how much have
you saved by doing the deal in the first place?

Smile - its February!

You would need to pay 13 days extra next month!

Its only 23 quid - but sadly a Rip Off Britain 23 quid!

Dont see the problem. You played the rules but didnt read them properly.
Billing date is available, and you are notified of it, before the cooling
off period ends. Lesson learnt.

Yeah, granted I still got myself a good deal overall, i guess it's just
the fact that it was never mentioned to me by chatterbox, and isn't in
any of their info or T&Cs.

I'm not trying to "scam" orange by downgrading, from what I understand
you are now entitled to do that with any contract with them after 6
months.

Not an plans costing £50 per month or more.

In fact ("mobile" this week) chatterbox have been axed as an orange
dealer specifically because of their heavy-cashback deals. You are the
"victim" to a certain extent and it is chatterbox who have failed to do
their job, however I would still argue that you've had a years phone use
for only £20 so you really don't have too much to complain about.

He's on a £70 per month contract... what does that mean for him?

How can a free phone and calls for a year for =A323 even begin to come
into the "Rip-Off Britain" category? You would pay a lot more for the
phone in countries that do not have these contract subsidies!

Not forgetting a free e-mail address with storage included in the =A323
(and the free phone they are free to sell to help recoup some of that
=A323). Orange, complete bastards really.

No downgrade for 12 months. ALthough this is only the case for contract
started after a certain date, possibly October or November of last year
I can't remember.

The rip off is it is costing 23 quid more that it would have appeared
to have been the cost in the first place.

The expression 'orange downgrade' seems funny in the first place - its
like you really could go lower! :-)
