I have just cancelled an Orange contract (expires on March 17th) but would
now like to keep my existing number. Will I still be able to get a PAC
number from Orange as the number is still live?

Also, could I port it to a Virgin sim I have with some credit on it although
the sim is unregistered? I intend to take out another contract and port the
number onto that new one.
Thanks in advance

yes, obtain your PAC from Orange then phone Virgin on 789 from the
Virgin mobile handset to register the sim and give them your PAC.

Alternately you can just ask Orange to transfer your account to PAYG -
they normally let your contract end as soon as you have received the
sim and call the 0800 0790006 number to change the account over.
