Missed call 08000510660
|

| Hi
Hope this question hasn't already been answered but I searched groups on
google and nothing found.
I have purposely not answered a call from 08000510660 to my mobile recently
thinking that it's odd to RECEIVE a call from an 0800 number and assuming it
to be a scam. Has anyone else recieved a call from 0800 and if so, who is
it from.
Was I right to 'miss' this call?

Calling that number gives a recorded message in an Irish accent saying
(paraphrased) "Apologies for any inconvenience caused by our phone call,
it was for telemarketing purposes and no further action is required on
your part. If you do not wish to receive further calls you may register
with the Telephone Preference Service."
I recommend calling 0800/00800 numbers when you get a missed call - do
it from a payphone and they can't trace you.

Depends - did you *want* double glazing/insurance/a new mobile/whatever
they were trying to sell?

Of course it's not possible to make a call from an 0800 number, but they
can be used as presentation numbers. Lots of companies use these where
they need to send a CLI (for example to avoid anonymous call rejection)
but can't, or don't want to, receive calls on the actual line being used.
Presentation numbers are perfectly legitimate and very widely used. For
example, if you receive a call from a BT call centre, you'll see an 0800
number. If you return the call you'll hear an announcement saying
someone from BT called and will try again later if they still need to
contact you. It's not ideal but it's preferable to not knowing where the
call came from or trying to return a call to an empty desk or a member
of staff who's engaged on other outgoing calls.
Why not try returning the call from a landline? It's not going to cost
you anything and it might satisfy your curiosity. The chances are you'll
just hear a recorded announcement like the BT example. If you're really
paranoid, just withhold your number.

This is a presentation number. It is not a scam, but very probably
marketing or something, although it might be your own SP. Why not call it
from a payphone?

Huh? It's quite possible for a phone to have an 08xx as its real number.
Just because it's not a BT product doesn't mean it's not possible.

| Sorry, been at work 2-10. Thanks for all the reply's. As I don't want any
Double glazing or the like I'll give it a miss. Nice to know that it
probably isn't a scam, just a mithering git trying to sell me something.
Thanks again
John

| I have a voip phone that terminates an 0800 number. If you make calls
from it, the 0800 number is what shows up.

If you call it it's a recorded voice saying "there is no action required
from yourself. The call was for telemarketing purposes only" If you do
not wish to receive calls of this nature you can register with the TPS
etc"
Basically it will be an autodialler which is going through numbers in
sequence and if the call connects then they know it's a real number and
add it to the "spam later" pile.

Dammit, now you tell me. I just spent half an hour getting a hard-on
ready.

| I get a call from 08000510660 about once a day, and I never pick it up,
for the same reasons as you: It's odd to recieve a call from a 08000
number, AND I don't usually pick up calls from unknown callers.
I don't know what I signed up to, or if I signed up to anything, but
I've been getting about 1 call a day for roughly 2 weeks... can anyone
help me with this? If you can help me, email me at
pimon.serry@gmail.com please... If anything I've said here isn't
allowed, please tell me.
*Confused*
It's scary xD

Meanwhile, if you`d bothered to check the answers it returns, you`d
know why it was being asked here.
