25p for 1 second call on Orange

| Last month I was playing around with the idea of using one of the dial
through services. I have just got my bill and on it was the following:
25/04/06 Tue 09:49 08444620002 Personal Number Services talk 0:00:01 0.25
a) Since when has 0844 numbers been classed as a Personal Number?
b) Since when has Orange introduced a 25p + VAT connection charge?
The account in question was Virgin OVP
I'm glad my main usage for the past 12 months has been O2!

0844 numbers are not in the same category as 0845 numbers, but come
under their "BT ContactCall" class (as do 0871 numbers).
Specifically, 0845 numbers are described as: "BT 0845 - Let new and
existing customers contact you for no more than 4 pence per minute (inc
VAT) on the BT network no matter where they are in the UK. Mobile and
other network costs may vary."
However, 0844 numbers are: "BT Contactcall 0844 - enables Business
Customers to be called from anywhere in the UK. Calls will be charged at
the rates shown in Section 2 Part 12 of this BT Price List. Under some
circumstances BT will make a Call Payment to the Customer."
The actual cost of the call depends on more than just 0844 but the
following 4 digits too. 0844 462 numbers are priced at 'g9' on BT,
which is 2p per minute daytime, evening and weekends.
However, this number's "Categorisation for customer options" is '2',
which means "Premium Rate Services and some NTS non-Premium Rate Services."
I guess Orange are taking BT's view and classing it as a premium rate
number, although BT only charge 2p per minute for the calls.

| Complain, good chance to get a refund on one of basis.
Got my money back out of T-Mob for unwittingly calling 07744 !

If you on OVP virgin then the calls will be charged exactly the same as
Virgin do (you signed up for those terms) so check what virgin charge for
the same call. If its 25p then your stuffed

Oh, NO they don't anymore.
Orange gave up matching Virgin long time ago, now it's just an old ring
fenced tariff with it's own
price structure. They never matched Virgin's 3p SMS, dropped free 0800,
etc.

Orange don't charge for calls less than 3 seconds so how has that
appeared on the bill??

I'm sure they'd match any price increase, or other change to the
customer's detriment (ie. if Virgin started charging for itemised
billing or calls to answerphone etc).

Not true - they do on OVP Virgin at least. My wife's on OVP Virgin, my
old phone was on Talk 120, now on T-Mobile W'n'W 200. Both before and
now, calls from my wife's phone of less than 3 seconds (ie. 1 or 2
seconds on the itemised bill) have been billed for.
My wife calls me, I reject the call (and it goes to answerphone), my
wife immediately hangs up, and I call her back (using inclusive
minutes). We have many calls each month billed for 1-2 seconds for the
brief time she's diverted to answerphone. Again, this was whilst both
on Orange, and again now I'm on T-Mobile.
Still, the method works, as her (itemised) bill per month is just
usually £2-£4 per month, most down to text messages.

Just made a 5 second call on that number using Virgin mobile and the
charge was 5p, which is the standard connection charge. Not much of a
price match there. But as already pointed out , they have not done that
for ages.

AFAIK they did introduce a tarif that was Oranges Equiv of virgin but any
customers that connected on the original OVP virgin tariff will still be on
it and have to pay the same call charges as if on Virgin
