Cheapest way of avoiding Orange PAYG disconnection when abroad
|
|
| Lars Wolos 2006-05-25, 11:48 pm |
| Hi,
I'm not in the UK at present and I have two Orange PAYG sims,
one lying in a drawer permanently and the other one in use (but only
to receive texts from the UK once in a while, no other chargeable
rip-off connections or texts whatsoever).
I wonder now if it's sufficient to call 450 free of charge at least
once every 6 months to avoid the risk of getting disconnected.
Or do I need to iniate something chargeable? Now that calls from
abroad are being charged in 60 sec increments, that doesn't really
look appealing.
Regards,
Lars

It has to be a chargeable event or a top-up.

My sentiments too, really.
You want the provider to keep your phone active for 'ever' but you're not
prepared to pay 60p for that privilege.
I know 60ppm is a rip off, but £1.20 per year just to keep your phone
active - that works out at 0.0002283ppm, which is really cheap!!!! ;-))

Is there a solution? Yes, switch to Virgin Mobile (which doesn't seem to
enforce disconnection).

They do. I have proof sitting in my desk drawer.

That's not the point, just a technical question to better understand
how it works + not leaning towards supporting rip-off roaming charges
in any way.
Just made a quick ~3sec call to each one of my Orange numbers
as incoming calls are charged in 1 sec increments. Btw. FYI the 10p
minimum call charge doesn't seem to apply: 3sec incoming -> 3p :-)

Lars

I am in the US and also have a Virgin payg sim that I keep active this
way (orange payg works the same). It has to be something chargable.
Not necccesarily a call. So, you can just send an SMS (30p I think) or
if you have GPRS enabled, just log in to GPRS and out. That will even
cost less tha 10p. Worst case scenario, you call the number and pick it
up. But, any of the above should work.
The fact that Virgin charges the same for GPRS, roaming or not, makes
it an attractive sim for GPRS usage while roaming. It came in handy on
a recent Eastern Caribbean cruise. I also used it in Spain and France
last year.

You have been very unlucky. Maybe they know you work for Orange?
