Author Data access from a MacBook

The current MacBook laptops don't have a PCcard/PCMCIA slot, so they
can't take a data card from any of the carriers.

Does anyone out there have a view on the best phone and data plan to
connect a phone by cable to a MacBook, purely for data access? I've
already got a phone for voice, texting etc.

Use bluetooth to pair the phone with the MacBook and create a data
connection over GPRS/3G instead of using a datacard.
