I'm looking for a cheap PAYG sim for use in France - I'll buy it over
there. I want it for calls inside France but mainly for receiving
calls from the UK!! Any recommendations?

Well depends how long you are in France and how callers are going to
call you but have you thought about a Vodafone payg SIM and activate
Passport for incoming calls? That way someone with inclusive xnet
minutes can call you and you pay 75p for up to 60 minutes talk off
peak? Similarly if you call back to the UK it costs 75p plus the cost
of 3 roaming minutes and you can talk off peak for up to 1 hour. At
least that's my understanding.

I would still get a local SIM and as Virgin have entered the French
market using Orange you may want to check them both out. Use Altavista
Babel fish to translate the pages. http://babelfish.altavista.com/

Whoops, sorry got confused with my Passport and Stop the Clock. What I
should have said is that if you make an off peak (off peak in the
country you are calling from) call to the UK you pay 75p plus standard
UK charges. So a 30 min OP call to a landline or Voda should cost 75p
plus =A31.50. The French network you should roam on is SFR

I know a bit of a faff changing SIMS but unless you could save quite a
bit of money depending on how often you call.

www.nrjmobile.fr do a prepaid sim (part of sfr).

You can buy it in Carrefour

I have one simply to test network strengths in the UK, using Net
Monitor.

Lasts for 6 months, without a top up.

Operators there are basically a cartel, so all have very similar
offerings. It's really a case of going to the nearest Carphone Warehouse
(normally one in the big commercial centres) and seeing if any have
special offers. For example, Bouyg often do a double credit offering.
One thing to remember is you'll probably need a passport and french
address to get a sim, so you might want to consider looking on fleabay.
