Can anyone tell me whether (most?) mobiles are able to point to a URL
of an .mms file (on some web server), download it and display it as an
MMS message? Or is it necessary to send them a WAP push message?

Is it possible to send mms messages via a data cable/IR?

thanks

MMS is different from WAP Push. Phones can't download .mms file. If
you want to send a multimedia file like a .midi or animated gif, you
can use WAP Push. Most phones support WAP Push SI. You can find an
example here - http://www.visualgsm.com/online_demo5.htm
