Author N95 8gb.n When is it due in the UK? Anyone know?

Hi.

I need a new phone and for lots of reasons I won't go in to here, I
would like to get a N95. However, we all know of the battery life on
one of them.

Nokia have made a new N95 8gb. Aparently it has software redesigned
to increase battery life, so I want to get one of these. If I just
jump in and get a standard 95 I'm sure I'll regret it in the future
when everyone else is using the better one.

So, when is it due out? I have emailed Nokia tech support and they
said:

"Thank you for emailing Nokia Care.

With regard to your email about the sales release of the Nokia N95
8GB, unfortunately we are unable to provide specific release dates
ahead of time. General release dates can be found from the relevant
support pages of our website.

You may also find it helpful to contact your chosen network service
provider (O2) or retailer as they may be able to provide details as to
when they plan to release this handset for retail."

O2 say they know nothing. I just wondered if anyone reading this
forum had any inside information on release dates in the UK? Should I
wait a couple of weeks or will it be months in which case I may just
get a vanilla 95 now.

Thanks.

It is not just a software revision as the RAM has been doubled in size,
the screen is larger and the battery has been changed to a 1200 mAh
Li-Ion battery as opposed to the 950 mAh in the original Nokia N95.

I believe Vodafone may already have some and others should also have
some soon. Keep looking.

The N95 8GB is already available on Vodafone,

http://www.mobilephonecontract.co.u...y.asp?hs=n958gb

It is also available from mobiles 2 your door and phones 4u, the link above
compares all three sites for the best tariffs

I can confirm that it became available from Voda today. If you want one from
them phone them rather than order off the web site as they generally offer a
better deal if you ask.

Thanks to all of you for your replies. I want it on o2 because many
people I call are already using them. I'm sure it won't be long now.

I bought one yesterday from Phones4u.

Impressed, but still a bit buggy in places.

I've had a look on a few websites about this, even though I'm
perfectly happy with my current 'normal' (I suppose that's now 'old')
n95 and the screen looks slightly bigger (But the resolution is the
same) but some people say it has an 8Gb internal 'hard drive' - I
imagine this is wrong and it can only take 'up to' an 8Gb miniSD?

Looking at the Nokia website for the specs the screen must be only
SLIGHTLY bigger:

'old' n95:
Volume: 90 cc
Weight: 120 g
Length: 99 mm
Width: 53 mm
Thickness (max): 21 mm

'new' n95:
Volume: 96 cc
Weight: 128 g
Length(max): 99 mm
Width(max): 53 mm
Thickness(max): 21 mm

....And the Nokia website lists the the new model as having a screen .2
inches bigger (that's point two inches...)

The new n95 has less internal memory than the old n95 according to the
specs from Nokia

'old' n95
Battery: Nokia Battery (BL-5F) 950mAH
Talk time: up to 160min (WCDMA), up to 240 min (GSM)*
Stand-by time: up to 200 hours (WCDMA), up to 225 hours (GSM)

'new' n95:
Battery: Nokia Battery (BL-6F) 1200mAH
Talk time: up to 210 minutes (WCDMA), up to 300 min (GSM)*
Stand-by time: up to 280 hours (WCDMA and GSM)*

However, seeing as the old n95 said it had 225 hours stand-by time and
only really lasted for a day if you had to use it for anything I
imagine you'll get to use the new n95 for a day and an extra hour.

Seems to me that they've got the old n95, put an extra 2mm on the
screen, left it the same resolution, put updated firmware on it (I
understand that the 'old' n95's new firmware also lets you use bigger
miniSD cards although I haven't updated due to the amount of bugs
introduced in the new firmware) and a battery that lasts an hour
longer. A good start. I've got another year with my old n95, which
I'm perfectly happy with, but am looking forward to a proper upgrade
of the handset that lets you use it for more than a day if you forget
to plug it in overnight!

Wrong, it has an internal memory/drive of 8GB and no external card slot.

Erm... just what I said, 8GB internal memory and no external card slot,
unlike the current model which uses an external card slot.

I came across this review yesterday, comparing the N95 to the N95 8GB
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/revi...kia_N95_8GB.php

It's quite an in depth comparison, and now I'm torn in which to get when I
next upgrade (in a few months). I was planning to buy the N95 from Play for
£380 and sell whatever phone I get given on Ebay (I can't STAND branded
phones)... Or, do I get a branded N95 8GB on contract? (The price off
contract would be way more than I can afford out right)...........

Thanks for that. I've had a read and it's a shame that Nokia didn't
go further with improvements, but the n95 (and now the n95 8GB) is
indeed a great handset.

If you're fairly technically competent, you can debrand the N95 yourself
using free software.

Alternatively most phones can be debranded for about £10.

I know, I managed to debrand my 6680 a year ago after a bit of research on
the net. I'd just be a little nervous about doing it to a brand new N95 8GB!
I might just wait and see. I can't upgrade until May next year, so I'll see
what prices are like then! After buying my current Unbranded / Unlocked N73
on Ebay last January, I did say to myself that I wouldn't never buy a
branded handset again! I have also found that many great firmware updates
are available for my N73 much sooner than branded N73's!

I just HATE the whole idea of it!

I rebranded my 3UK N73 a few months after I got it and have now updated I
think 4 times, its an easy process you just need NSS to change the product
code and then you update using the Nokia Software Updater program. Once fw
updated, you just change the product code back again.

What you need to be sure of is that you have the usb cable connected well
and don't touch it during the update process.

I've got a step by step guide on my (home) website if you ever decide to
rebrand your N73.

Actually, despite what a lot of people say about ebay (most just relaying
some scare story they heard 4th hand) it is a great place to buy mobile
phones. As long as you follow common sense and pick a seller with decent
feedback, who concentrates on phones and has been doing it for a couple of
years.

A lot of trade done in upgrade handsets that aren't wanted and are debranded
and unlocked, which often works out much cheaper than a sim free and quicker
to the market if it is a popular phone that the manufacturer holds back for
contract supply first.

Standard firmwares are always available first, because they have to be
branded and tested by the network providers and then signed off for release.
