Auto update of time and date (Vodafone)

| Does anyone know how frequently the update is sent over the network on
Vodafone to update the time and date on the handset? If I'm correct,
Vodafone are the only UK network to offer this (certainly Orange, Three and
O2 don't) but not sure how frequently the phone's time is updated by the
network.

| Vodafone's is approximately every 3 hours from when u've turned the handset
on I think. The GPRS refreshes and the update goes through.

I think not.
The wife's O2 phone was updated when she switched it on this morning
(and she even received a polite pop-up telling her), my Vodafone phone
stubbornly still displayed BST (even though it was on all night) until
I manually changed it just now.
Oh, and ironically it told me I couldn't manually change the time
while auto-update was switched on!
Why offer facilities that don't work?

Not on PAYG they don't, mine still hasn't updated. Changed it manually now

Strange that. My sons have identical PAYG phones on Orange. One updated,
and one didn't.

Cheers everyone, I didn't realise the phone needs a GPRS connection to
update the time, thought it was sent via the BCCH (Broadcast control
channel) every now and then. My mate sent me an MMS and it updated then.

Not quite answering your question I know, but when did that ever stop
anyone posting on Usenet? :)
I took my Vodafone SIM to Egypt last week and (as usual when travelling
abroad with Vodafone in my experience) the phone changed to the correct
local time each time I turned it back on after flights. I also noticed
that it changed time 4 or 5 hours ahead of local time at one point when
out in the desert well away from the local towns, so I've no idea where
it had roamed to then!

They do! On Vodafone, you just have to make a gprs connection! With Auto
time update switched off, adjust the clock and date to anything you like,
switch auto time update back on, then connect to wap. If it's a Nokia, just
hold down the Zero key to connect to Wap. It will update as soon as it makes
a data connection.

Nothing, just connect to Wap. Vodafone Live home page is free (until you
browse to another link)

Or set your GPRS to 'always online' rather than 'when needed' (on
nokia's) and then you wont even have to open the internet up.

What if it doesn't or you don't use GPRS..? I refuse to use it as it is
far too expensive. When I took my Tesco phone to the US a few weeks ago it
updated as soon as I switched it on and it found the roaming network. Also
when I got back home. Orange..? Didn't budge.

In the USA GSM networks send a GSM NITZ (Network Identity and Time Zone)
message from the base station to the handsets on the GSM control channel
periodically to set the time and date. As this has nothing to do with
GPRS the UK networks may use a different mechanism (like sending the
time from the GGSN handling the GPRS connection somehow) to do the same
thing.
The reason why most GSM networks don't send the NITZ messages is that
GSM base stations don't need to know what time it is to operate, and
so don't have the information available to tell your handset the
time unless the network operator somehow provides the time of day
to the base station especially for this purpose. CDMA base stations of
both the USA and the 3G UMTS varieties, on the other hand, need to
know the time of day with great precision to operate, so for them
it is quite cheap to send this information on to the handset as well.
I hence think the reason you mostly see only North American GSM networks
sending the time of day automatically like this is that they compete
with CDMA operators for whom sending the time to the phones is cheap,
and so the GSM guys have competitive reasons for paying the cost
distributing time-of-day information to all their base stations to
provide the same feature. In all-GSM Europe, however, I guess there's
a lot less incentive for operators to pay for this feature since
all their competitors have the same problem.

What's who I am got to do with it..? If other networks can update the time
without the use of chargeable GPRS, why can't Orange..?

Why not..? Please answer the question - why should I have to pay to update
the time on my phone when the data is freely available from the network..?
Other networks manage it perfectly well, why can't Orange..?
The amount charged is irrelevant. It doesn't matter a jot whether it's 1p
or £1 - it's a charge for something that doesn't require charging for.

The Orange World homepage plus a few other sections of Orange World are
free to browse - so surely there wouldn't be any charge at all in
connecting to the OW homepage?
I'd dare say the auto-update has a good lot to do with handset settings
too. Most handsets can be set to have GPRS set to "always on" or "when
needed", always on meaning theres a constant connection to GPRS. You
might find the people who have auto-updated have the former enabled.
