Nothing more unless the foreign network charges to receive (very
unlikely, & he'd know)
Businesses often send from abroad to UK for UK only messages because
the bulk stuff
is cheaper, watch out some networks delay/reject some originators.

Why are people so lazy?

A few clicks on the Orange Website and I found this:

Sorry, Orange Pay as you Go is not available in Canada.

That tells you how much the OP would be charged if he took his Orange
phone to Canada (answer: nothing, because you can't use it, because
Orange doesn't have PAYG roaming arrangements with any Canadian
networks). It doesn't tell you Orange's tariff for sending text
messages from the UK to a Canadian number.

The correct answer is in here:
http://www1.orange.co.uk/service_pl...vices_costs.pdf

It's 20p per message (compared with 10p for UK domestic messages).

Why are some people so intolerant?

The url you grudgingly provided doesn't even address the OP's query:
he was asking about sending texts TO Canada - you could do well to
read his question.

Whereas if we'd actually read the OP, he states that his mate in Canada is
on a UK network, so the real answer is ..... the same as it costs to text
him when he's in the UK!

If you are sendinga text to a UK mobile, then it doesn't matter where it
is, it will cost you the same, as would calling it cost you the same
whether the person you are calling is in the UK or not, as it would be
wrong for you to pay more when you may not even know the person isn't in
the UK.

If the recipient is on a UK phone roaming (successfully) in Canada it
costs no more for you to text them (you're texting a UK mobile), and AFAIK
no UK network charges for receiving texts when roaming. Certainly Orange
and Virgin don't. They'll pay more to reply though.

Not quite. He was asking how much to text a UK mobile that was roaming in
Canada. Answer is, same as if the recipient was at home.

It will cost them something like =A31 a minute to receive calls - I
can't be bothered to look it up more accurately as I assume this will
put you off enough

It varies so much with uk network, roaming network, and country that it
is difficult to be dogmatic. On my business T-mobile it costs me 30p
to recieve a uk text in the USA, and $3.50 per minute to recieve a UK
incoming call, the same as making one. IN Brazil that was up to 50p
per text, and 11.5BR per minute. In Trinidad it was free and 50p per
minute.

There is a simple rule: calling (or texting) a number costs what it
costs. If a mobile's owner has taken it somewhere else, that's their
problem, and they pay for any additional costs involved in getting the
message to them.

As it happens, I don't think there are any additional costs for texts
to Canada, but even if there were, you can't be expected to know where
a mobile is, so you can't be charged extra to call or text it.

Boy, that doesn't sound right. With my T-Mobile PAYG account incoming
text seems to be free everywhere it works at all. I also know it roams
at 55p/minute for voice in the USA and Canada, and from the web page
is UKP1.40/minute for voice in Brazil. And if you are getting voice
at 50p/minute in Trinidad, including outgoing overseas calls, you may be
doing better than even a local PAYG SIM; calling costs in Trinidad
are horrible, and the T-Mobile web page calls it UKP1.40/minute for
PAYG roaming there.

In any case, it costs the person who is roaming to receive a voice call
and it is expensive enough that the average person who is paying their
own bill is unlikely to want to chat for a long time when someone
phones them. I wish roaming were cheaper; right now I have a collection
of local PAYG SIMs for countries I visit often enough to keep them
alive, and I keep a London geographical number along with Hong Kong
and USA mobile numbers alive where I am by forwarding through Skype
to the local number. Some places this works really well. I spent
3 weeks in China last month getting calls that cost me 1.2p/minute
and were cheap local calls to most of the callers.

Hi guys! My first post - would have set up a new thread but don't know
how to just yet!

I have recently met a Czech girl who is now my girlfriend; we send each
other a lot of texts which as you'd imagine soon adds up.

I am on Orange Dolphin 35 which means I get unlimited texts to all UK
networks. If you have answered this question previously then my
apologies; but if I supply my girlfriend with a PAYG Orange sim card am
I right in thinking that it will no longer cost me to text her? I
understand that it will cost nothing to receive them in Czech Republic.

I look forward to your advise!

Thanking you in advance.

Paul

Yep, you're right, as long as the phone will work out there and maybe you
make a 'chargeable call' every six months

True, I think. It will still cost her to text you though...
