when does contract start?

| For a brand new phone, SIM, connection etc (to orange) at what point
does the contract start with the network provider?
Is it when I put the SIM in & connect for the first time, or when the
shop / retailer sets up the contract with the network?

My first contract was bought in a shop and I called the same day
anyway; I expect it's when the dealer reports it though.
The others have been ordered on the internet and seem to start when
the dealer processes the order and despatches it, even if you then
need to call to register. So you might lose a day or two; if this
upsets you don't order on a Friday.
Then the billing date may not be exactly a month after connection, so
the first bill may have a part period and a full month, looking a bit
more expensive.
