I got a new W880i on Orange last week when Phones4U called me up and offered
me an early upgrade (they are paying off the remaining couple of months of
my current Voda contract). "Great!", I thought.

I got hold of the phone first thing on Thursday morning (would have been
Wed, but I'd missed the courier and went to collect from local Royal Mail
depot) and in the bumf it said I would be connected within 48 hours...

Come Saturday morning my phone still wasn't registered. It would find the
Orange network ok, but any attempt to call out would be redirected to Orange
registrations (who can't do anything as the dealer needs to set things up
apparently). I called phones4u to find out what was going on and they
informed me that they had never received delivery confirmation from Royal
Mail, but that they would tell the connections department and it would now
be activated within 48 hours...

So Monday morning still nothing, I call again and this time I'm told that
the connections department are closed at weekends and so they will have only
just got the request on Monday! Supposedly yet another 48 hours to wait.

Well I know it's not quite 48 hours since I was last told that it was with
connections, but it still isn't registering when I turn the handset on and I
really fail to see how it can possibly take so long?

Is there something I am doing wrong? The person I spoke to on the Monday
told me I should be leaving the phone off and just turning it on every hour
or so to see if it has registered yet - is that right? Or should I just
leave it switched on? I'd had it on up until Monday, but after speaking to
the person then I've been doing what they suggested and leaving it off and
turning on every now and then, but nothing seems to be happening. Should it
be fairly instantaneous when it registers? Should I get a SIM update
immediately? I'm certainly expecting to need one as my handset currently
doesn't show any of the SMS menus - which I'm hoping is just the SIM doing
weird things rather than the handset being wonky (I have a vague
recollection of having a similar thing before that was sorted out with a SIM
update).

So frustrating having the (admittedly lovely) handset, but not being able to
actually use it for anything useful other than play with the menus!

I know that most Orange contract SIM's are supplied with a transit bar
in place, so it might be worth calling Orange CS and asking them if
there is one on your SIM card@

If there is ask them to lift the transit bar.

Mind you it also be that you have a faulty SIM card!

Try switching it off and on again - a colleague needed to power-cycle
hers for it to register properly.

COnnections closed on the weekend? The busiest period of trade? That's a
good one!

It takes about 2 minutes. They simply have not done it.

Apart from buying from P4U? No mate, not your fault.

Yes, absolutely.

Pretty much. And calls will not get redirected to 980.

Perfectly normal for a non-activated SIM.

Well I wasn't planning to this time around - but they called me up and
offered to pay off my old contract two months early, and the salesperson on
the phone was actually very polite and helpful. My current handset (BenQ
Siemens EF81) has been awful (terrible battery life, very buggy firmware,
phone frequently turning off in the middle of calls etc.) and I've been keen
to replace it ASAP, so I was convinced to take the new contract early.

Thanks for the rest of your (and everyone else's) replies - it sounds like
there is just awful communications between the various P4U departments. I
just hope the thing finally gets connected today!
