Orange PAYG 1 Pound a Day Unlimited access stopped working
|

| Zippy 2007-05-24, 10:33 pm |
| Has anyone else using the 1 pound a day unlimited GPRS access (450 5 1 1 3 1
1 1 1 etc) noticed that despite been charged the £1 and receiving
confirmation txt they are suddenly been charged by the byte?
Contacting Orange customer services produced the now familiar "we don't have
that option", followed by "you can only use it for WAP not email or web
access" followed by "we don't have any way of accessing information about
your data usage for at least 24 hours so call back tomorrow" level of
service one now comes to expect of Orange.
How I long for the days when at least the tubbies working at Orange had a
vague idea what they were talking about....
As I use GPRS data infrequently throughout the year (but solidly for a week
a couple of times each year) a monthly data plan isn't much use to me -
hence PAYG GPRS is ideal - are their any alternatives to Orange?
regards,
Zippy.

That is actually true. CDR records are not posted to the account for a
good 2-3 days so it's quite impossible for a CSR to tell what you were
charged for something just a few hours hours ago.

I've had the same problem. If I connect my laptop it will connect but won't
transfer data at all, yet it works with my Palm TX on GPRS and my TomTom. I
use a Moto V3 with Moto's own connection software and it all worked fine. I
had used the £1 a day a couple of times with my laptop (basically on the
train) and now it just won't transmit data. I thought it might be a problem
with my laptop but as I've got two others with the same software on it
doesn't work either. I tried creating a normal GPRS connection, which
connects, but again do data transfer.
I'm guessing they've put a block on it? Problem is even if I haven't paid
for the £1 a day it still won't let me transfer data at normal cost with a
laptop.
What I can't work out is how they know it's a laptop connected? Is it
because the laptop is trying to download data much quicker than a PDA or
TomTom unit?

We seem to pay very high rates for data. Checkout Virginmobile.com.au
Click Rates/3g
50MB for £2
300MB for £4
So that's how much data costs in Australia.
PAYG for Virgin UK is £5/MB, T-Mobile £7.50/MB
I realise that this isn't exactly comparing like with like but it
gives a flavour of how much extra we pay for data in comparison.
At one time some government cronie suggested a tax on mobile phones.
They've got it by the back door. The Government, having got so much
out of the 3G auction, have left the mobile phone companies to
recoup their outlay by charging inflated prices for data.. Well,
that's the way I see it anyway.

Im using a windows OS with Bluetooth connection to an SE700i I keep for data
only.
the usual trick is to use
*99#p+cgdcont=3,"ip","orangeinternet"
in the phone number with dialup networking (having selected the relevant
bluetooth "modem" when setting up the connection)
replace the 3 in the above string with the ID of the GPRS profile in the
phone you want to use.
I couldnt tell you how to find out what ID you need to use from a Motora
though - the 700i lists the ID of each profile in its details section.

Orange have always advertised it as unrestricted and not limited to phones
inbuilt apps - and thats how it has always been for me - I think the "it
only works for WAP" was just made up by this tubby on the spur of the
moment.
Orange did screw up data last year when they were trailing the Opera mobile
browser on their phones - they accidentally enabled some safeguard system
and blocked all internet access on mobile phone browsers for everyone who
didnt have the "adult products" bar removed - it took weeks for them to fix
it, but ironically it didnt affect laptop access at all.
The trouble is these days the orange tubbies dont have much idea and the
only way to get anything resolved that involves money is to write to the
executive office - which costs more in time than its worth if the amount is
only a few pounds. They still owe me £25 from a contract overcharge - Ive
even got the bill with a £25 refund on it that they promised would be
refunded to my bank account, still waiting..... yet another letter to Exec
Office required.
regards,
Zippy.

T-Mobile web'n'walk £7.50 for 1GB, £12 for 3GB.
