Author Questions about the N95

Just received a Nokia N95 from T-Mobile

Before I chose this phone I knew about the battery life being poor but felt
I could somehow deal with the issues by a bit of power saving. So I have
adopted the following settings:

HSDPA set to "when needed" (no option to disable)
3G disabled (in a poor 3G area anyway)
WLAN scanning OFF - it defaults to off anyway
Bluetooth OFF (not required)

Is there anything else I can do to save power? I have not actually tested
the above settings yet as I only received the phone today and just now
changed the settings, so I need a full day tomorrow to check the life
capacity.

HSDPA - Never looked at it

3G - Always on for me as I use it so much. I previously had an e61
which had fringe 3G coverage on an inferior (3) network. It kept
scanning, registering, losing signal, scanning, re-registering on 2G,
then scanning and re-registering on 3G... the battery life was
terrible because of this. If you've got bad signal then it's best to
turn it off if you don't use it, but the phone is so much better with
it on if you use the phone as I do. I've sent nearly 300mb of data in
the last couple of weeks and received over 1Gb.

I've left WLAN scanning 'off' on my n95. If you connect to t'internet
or whatever it prompts you and searches for the networks you've
previously connected to. Having the WLAN scanning on means it does it
all the time which I have no use for.

Bluetooth is set to off for me and is set to a shortcut on the Active
Standby (front) screen for when I might need it.

While the battery life on the n95 is far from fantastic there are
other ways to make it last longer. As the battery is new it's not
going to get to it's full operatinal functionality time until you've
gone through several full recharge/full drain cycles. Also, as it's a
new phone you're going to be using it a lot more than normal and
putting a lot of drain on the battery.

I have my spare charger at work and when I'm playing MP3s or listening
to the radio during the day I plug it in for a few minutes.

I absolutely love my n95, it goes straight to the 'best phones I've
ever owned' pile along with the 7110 and 6210, but the battery life
leaves much to be desired. I only hope that next year Nokia re-fab
the phone and keep the decent features but find a way to squeeze a
larger battery into it somehow.

Hi BGN,

Thanks for the advice.
I don't think the battery issue would have been such an issue if Nokia had
implemented charge by USB aswell. Most people nowadays are not far from a
PC and most departments are bound to have Mini-USB cables, someone could
even leave one at work as they arent expensive.
That way if someone has hammered the battery while at work they can easily
charge it up over their lunch hour or something.
Maybe this is something that could be possibly fixed in a firmware upgrade
or is it a hardware issue?

As for the battery today, its not done too badly. I did a charge this
afternoon although I do intend to charge it properly overnight tonight. I
have setup wlan wireless (although it didn't work due to current
incompatibility with sky router), plotted my GPS position, sent 6 texts and
2 emails, installed 2 programs and taken a couple of photos, done about 15
mins browsing and obviously fiddled alot with settings and just browsing the
phone and its still on 7 bars maximum.

I think the biggest hit on the battery would have been leaving 3G on. I
have very little 3G here and the battery would have been hammered all day
trying to find a signal.

I don't think the battery issue would have been such an issue if Nokia
had made the phone 2mm thicker and crammed an extra 2mm of battery
into it :)

If Nokia do re-fab the n95 next year (I hope they do!) then hopefully
a few components will have shrunk so they can cram a bigger battery
in.

Battery technology doesn't appear to have caught up fully with the
larger power needs of our mobile devices, which are now smaller than
ever and need more and more oomph.

Its a shame they don't run on double AAs - I have a few rechargables that
are nearly 3000mah :-)

BTW what is "refab"?

Well something has gone wrong. I was at work for only one hour and the
battery went completely dead, not even a flicker of power.
The small shop I work in can only get a signal if I go to the window. I
think what has happened is that it has been hammering the battery looking
for a signal.
I don't know what to do now, its rendered itself just useless to me.

Seems a bit odd. If you use the phone for an hour to make a call
(which uses more power) it wouldn't run dead in that time.

I say stay with it for a couple more days then contact your network
for advice.

Well I phoned Nokia today and they suggested I take it to a local service
centre and get both the battery and handset checked over. I will do that
sometime this week.
Interestingly though, I have just been back to work for an hour in the same
place and the battery is absolutely fine. I have no idea what happened
before but maybe it is just some freak occurance.

Quite odd, yes. Perhaps the phone was unplugged and didn't charge
during the night or whatever.

The battery life isn't all that fantastic on the first few charges,
but it's still going to last.

Yeah I will see how it goes over the next few days. If there is still a
problem I will return it, but I am sure it will eventually be okay.
I read in a few places that the battery doesnt reach its peak until after
3-4 charges.

There's a difference between 'peak' meaning a couple of hours standby
time lost and 'rock bottom' meaning only lasting for an hour!

Perhaps it was just having a flibble to itself or something. Mine
didn't do that, but I do remember the first day I used it the battery
lasted three hours as I couldn't stop playing with it :)

Well I cannot blame using it, I didn;t have time to use it at work today.
So it literally depleted itself without doing anything. I shall monitor the
situation but all seems okay for the moment.
