I've been on a Vodafone Anytime 100 contract since sometime in 2005. I
pay £14.99 per month for the line, 100 inclusive minutes and a bunch
of texts. I rarely use any texts and rarely go over the 100 minutes so
the deal is satisfactory to me.

Yesterday I received a phone call from Vodafone offering me a new
deal, 150 minutes and 100 texts, for an 18 month commitment at £12.50
per month for 15 months, £25 per month for the last three months and a
£50 cash back after three months. I was told that this was a £25 per
month contract that I was getting at half price except for the last
three months. It was when I pointed out that the £37.50 extra payable
over the last three months meant that I was only 50p per month and 50
minutes to the good that the cashback was offered. The Vodafone person
obviously wasn't used to talking to anyone capable of performing
simple mental arithmetic.

There's a 14-day cooling off period but the new sim arrived today with
no paperwork beyond the delivery note and no contact address beyond
that of the despatch warehouse in Nuneaton.

Any comments on this deal? It looks OK to me, I don't mind the 18
month lock-in. I assume they'll try and get more cash out of me in 18
months but I'll be prepared to argue the point and threaten to move
away. I'd expect the rates to be reducing anyway.

(The last couple of years they've phoned me, asked me if I wanted a
new phone and sent me £30 when I said that I didn't - strange way of
doing business.)

Sounds to me like they've sent you a new line with a new
connection.

If you put the new sim card into a phone does it work? If it
does dial *#100# and it'll tell you the number of the new line.

If this is the case and what you didn't ask for, ring 191 from
your phone and tell customer services, they'll be able to get
this stopped for you, I had the same thing recently when i
upgraded, they offered me a sim only deal on a 30 day
contract, upon reflection though I didn't need it and they
cancelled it straight away.

You are quite right and if I'd done nothing I would have been paying
the 14.99 and the £12.50! I've phone them and cancelled it. On
reflection it was very cheeky. We were clearly talking about my
current usage, 'would I use the phone more if I had more minutes?' He
probably did say it was a new line but he didn't explain that it would
run alongside the existing and that I would be paying £12.50 extra.
Wonder if they'll ring and offer the £30 now?!

Just ring them and ask to speak to their disconnections team,
they'll offer you a non hardware deal, they don't offer
cashback or anything but could put a discount on your £14.99
line rental if you agree to stay with them.

A silly question, but are you sure it was really Vodafone calling? I've had
cold calls pretending to be BT/mobile networks trying to sell me contracts,
which obviously came from India and AFAICS had no relation to the networks
(eg thought I lived in London, even though the landline they were ringing me
on has another area code nowhere near London). Usually the spiel was
something like:

'We'll give you a free phone, that's completely free, you can keep it with
nothing to pay, there's free connection and that's a free phone. You just
pay 15 pounds a month'

which presumably would mean I'd receive a ten pound phone on an 18 month
contract with minimal inclusive minutes (these were never mentioned). So I
tend to be wary of anyone who cold calls like this.

A classic example of why you shouldn't believe sales people - they all seem
to have one thing in common, they lie to people in order to make a living in
my experience.
I never agree to anything over the phone, I ask for full details of any
offers to be sent - and none have ever turned up!
You would be better on Virgin PAYG unless you're calling various mobile
networks. Only pay for what you use, and Virgin is the cheapest PAYG.

Yes, it was. I 'thought' so at the time, because he had access to my
billing. When I rang CS the woman confirmed that it was; an office at
Stoke apparently, it was recorded on my account.
In the past I've had calls from Vodafone resellers but they lose
interest when they find out how little I use the phone and that I'm
not interested in having a new one.

Cashback? Directly from Vodafone? I highly doubt it was actually=20
Vodafone that called you.

Cashback is something you would usually associate with an independant=20
dealer. Be careful before proceeding.

I've had a loyalty cheque from Vodafone at least in 2007 and 2006,
perhaps before that, I don't remember. I don't know why this has been.
I'm sure that there was no mention of it when the contract was set up
but they've phoned, said that it's the end of the 12 months coming up,
did I want a new phone? When I said no they said they'd send me a
cheque and ring me in 12 months.

And locked you in for a period fo 12 months at the same time don't
forget.
