Got hold of a second-hand N73 just before Christmas, up to now it's been
great, but now I keep getting a load of "low memory" or "memory full"
errors.

It came with a few apps installed which the previous owner must have put
on there and since putting in a 1gb memory card I've put a couple on
myself (installed to the card).

I'm sure when I got it, there was at least 8mb free memory, but now on
checking it's showing memory in use as 42mb, free memory 142kb, with 7kb
Calender, 45kb contacts and 30kb messages.

I make a few calls, send texts and use Opera Mini, Yahoo Go and very
occasionally google maps pretty much nothing else. So where could all
the memory have gone?

First step is to hold down the menu button to see what apps are running.
Then fire up file explorer and delete anything unneeded in the phone memory,
images, sounds whatever.

Thanks for your help.

By the menu button ,do you mean the one on the far left, next to the "1"
and "4" keys and above the text editor button? If so when I hold it down
it only comes up with one box with "standby" in it, nothing else.

There's pretty much no images or sounds anywhere on the phone, as I'd
already moved everything to the memory card. Which is why I can't
understand where all the phone memory has gone.

OK, at least there are no other apps running, if they were they would appear
there.

No, that's the weird thing. No matter what I delete, in a week or so,
I'm back to getting the memory warnings again. Makes me wonder if there
might be a memory leak or something on one of the apps I use.

1. What apps are on the phone?
2. What firmware is on the phone (type *#0000# at the main screen)?

The N73 early firmware was always nicking memory, then I upgraded my
firmware and the problem has went away (My Current N73 FW v4.0736.3.2.1).

I'd recommend installing Epocware's Handy Taskman as this will tell you all
the hidden apps which are really running in the background.

Personally I'd upgrade the firmware and install all new apps to the internal
memory rather than the external memory card. Makes the apps run faster if
installed to the internal memory.

I posted a guide to upgrading and maintaining a N73 on my vox blog, I'd
direct you to the exact link, but work PC denies access to vox.

When I first got my N73 I installed to internal & external, but it quickly
screwed my phone up. After reading a few helpful guides on the internet I
realised its best to install on the internal memory if you can. Its a pain I
know, I've been down to 1.3MB of internal memory before, so I have to
restrict myself to the apps i really need and use. All others are stored in
zip files on the memory card if I ever need to install and use.

1. Flash to latest FW
2. Install to internal memory only (limited the number of apps)
3. Clear Cache regularily from Built-in browser and Opera Mobile if you have
it.
4. Keep SMS/MMS/Email on the phone memory, but deleted or backup regularily.

I recently did a reset of my phone and only installed the apps I use
regularily which include:
Opera Mobile
Nokia Internet Radio Player
Google Mail
Google Maps
LCG Slick (Messenger for MSN/Yahoo/AIM/ICQ/GTalk)
LCG X-plore (Powerful File Manager)
Sky Anytime
Shazam ID
Jaiku
Shozu

YouTube
Handy Taskman
Handy Clock
SplashID (Password Store)
Y-Browser (Another useful File Manager)
Zip Manager v1.0
Barcode Reader

A pointer to the latest firmware would be handy, all I can find on the
Nokia site is the automatic updater, which obviously didn't do much
before.

I did try finding it on your vox blog, couldn't seem to see it anywhere
though.

How to upgrade the N73

My mobile was a 3 branded N73 which I had to rebrand to the generic version
before I could upgrade to the latest firmware. Its an easy process (you just
change the product code using NSS), only thing I would say is be careful of
the USB cable with the N73 its a bit flacky, so just don't go near it or
touch it while its upgrading using the Nokia Software Updater.

I've upgraded my N73 about 4 times over the last year or so.

Well, I finally seem to have got to the bottom of the problem. On
checking the memory after each application use, I found that Yahoo Go
was the culprit.

Ended up deleting it completely, which freed up a massive 40mb memory on
my phone and re-downloaded and reinstalled it and I'll keep an eye on it
from now on. It does seem to have a slightly different layout and
different options in it now, so I may have had an old version before,
hopefully if I have got a newer version, it may have had some memory
problems ironed out.

YahooGo is crap, I've had no end of trouble installing and trying to run it
on various N73 and N95's. For what it can do, you'd probably be better off
using the web browser.

Not as yet, I've got all the relevant stuff downloaded to my pc, ready
to go, it's just a matter of finding some spare time to sit and do it
