Google Maps; Data Costs

| Please could someone give me an idea how much data Google maps uses?
If someone has got a data package, maybe they could tell me, or do a quick
experiment and find out roughly how much data the following takes (upload
and download):
Search for a place (town). Scroll round the area a bit. Zoom in to street
level and then switch the view to satellite photo.
I want to have a play with Google Maps Mobile, but with the stupid data
costs on my VM tariff, (>5 grand per Gb) I'm worried I'd have to sell my
house to pay next months bill if I do...

My quick experiment sent 16.16kB and recieved 285.96kB.

The Google Maps application has a counter built-in for recieved data. I
did the same and it's about the same - obviously a lot more in picture
mode.
With 5 minutes "play" looking at a local town I was able to clock up
about 1.5MB of download (it doesn't tell you upload)
Fortunately via Wi-Fi ...
Sounds like you need a PAYG SIM on a better data tarrif ...

Thanks for that!
So about £1.50 with good ole VM then...
Mind you that will drop to 'only' about 60p when they reduce their price in
a few months.
Still not really a useable rate though... shame, I can't beat their
phone/text price, but they just won't play ball on the data costs... :-(

Wow, so about £7.50!! I think it does indeed sound very much like I need a
better tariff!!
Trouble is I can't find anyone else that can beat the phone and SMS prices I
get on Virgin.
Why-oh-why can't they introduce a decent flippin data tarrif?, surely they
must realise that people want to use more data-intensive stuff on their
phones these days ??
3 sound good, but I don't really want to change my handset at the moment,
and my W610i doesn't support 3G

You could always get a T-Mobile Sim and use it in your VM phone.
I'm on a T-Mobile Flext tarrif with Web'n'walk plus as an extra, so that amount of
data never even touched my allowance.
IMO the Flext approach of giving a value to use over the month is far better than
x mins and y texts, means I can talk lots one month and text lots another and not
get caught out.
EU roaming MMS also comes out of my allowance, so they are effectivly free when
I am outside the UK. Confused my wife when she got an MMS with no attachment
though.

erm, so you pay for SMS whilst roaming, but not for MMS (or at least
roaming MMS comes out of the allowance).
That's neat, so it's cheaper to send a text only MMS than a SMS...
How much/month does your FlexT thing cost you a month then? including your
web and walk, but assuming you don't rack up any out of allowance charges??

About £20 for web'n'walk, and about another £12 for web'n'walk plus (3G per month
and use of phone as a modem).

Buy a 3 PAYG SIM from the three.co.uk website for £9.99 which comes with £10
credit. Now month 1 use £5 of that credit to buy the Internet Monthly Add-on
which will give you 2GB of data allowance. Month 2 buy the Intenet add-on
again for £5. Month 3 buy a £10 topup card and use £5 for Internet Add-on,
and so on and so on and so on.
I use my 3 PAYG SIM as a Modem for my N800 Internet Tablet for everything
and anything.

PAYG sim, that sounds like a good idea for me too :)

To download the maps to my phone via my PC,
Africa - 84.4MB
America - 1767MB
Asia - 434.9MB
Australia/Oceania - 118.2MB
Europe - 1657.4MB
This is to street level but doesn't include satallite photo's.

2G/3G/3.5G It works okay, just as long as your mobile is a 3G phone.
T-mobile signal is crap anywhere I go, you'll be suprised where you get a
3 signal.

Where did you download these from?
I can't seem to find them linked from www.google.com/gmm/
Incidentally, does anyone use GMM with GPS? Is it any good? Does it
track location in real-time and give speed/direction/etc?

| you dont need a 3G phone to use 3's data. You will experience a much slower
download speed though; service will be provided by Orange's 2G GPRS and EDGE
network.

I had a O2 XDA Stellar with built in GPS and a unlimited data tariff and it
was bloody good esp with the "satellite" images loading too.
It knew on which side of the street I was walking on and my "exact" location
most of the time (apart from when accidentally covering GPS with hand)
When on a train it even knew which track we were on (and there were on two
sets of tracks)
Have to say I was mightily impressed overall (as a gadgety person too)
Shame i sent XDA back as it was too fiddly for other things etc.
Now running google maps on Sony E K800i as a tester and it works well too
but the "my location" bit does not. Not sure if this is because of phone
not having GPS receiver or other limitations - I understood it was mobile
phone masts it used to get your location rather than on board GPS. Have to
say its still good tho even with just the maps you should not get lost and
directions too still work.
Unlimited data is essential though.
